UNGA adopts Bangladesh’s peace resolution
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday adopted a Bangladesh-sponsored resolution reaffirming the international community’s commitment to promoting dialogue, tolerance, solidarity and peaceful coexistence at a time of growing global challenges to peace and stability.
The resolution, titled “Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace,” was adopted by the General Assembly, renewing global support for advancing peace through dialogue, mutual understanding and multilateral cooperation.
According to a message received on Saturday, Bangladesh tabled the resolution at the UN, continuing its longstanding leadership in advancing the global Culture of Peace agenda.
Introducing the resolution, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, said peaceful, inclusive and resilient societies could only be built through sustained dialogue, mutual respect and acceptance of diversity.
He underscored the importance of upholding the principles of the UN Charter while strengthening international peace, stability and cooperation.
The ambassador thanked UN member states for their constructive engagement and broad support for the resolution, calling for renewed global efforts to prioritise dialogue over division, cooperation over conflict and understanding over intolerance.
Originally adopted in 1999 at Bangladesh’s initiative, the Culture of Peace resolution has since become the United Nations’ principal framework for promoting a global culture of peace.
The initiative encourages respect for diversity, tolerance, solidarity and non-violence, while supporting international efforts to prevent conflict, strengthen peaceful coexistence and reinforce multilateral cooperation.
First adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1999, the resolution has continued to serve as a key international framework for fostering peaceful relations among nations and communities through dialogue, understanding and cooperation.
