Minister vents anger seeing drugs in hospital toilet

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain has stated that the current government is working to improve the quality of healthcare services and ensure transparency and accountability.

He remarked that the country’s healthcare system had collapsed during the tenure of the previous government due to rampant irregularities, corruption, and the plundering of funds in the health sector.

He made these remarks while speaking to journalists following a surprise visit to the 50-bed Upazila Health Complex in Morelganj, Bagerhat, on Saturday morning (July 25).

The Minister stated that the country’s 50-bed hospitals are being gradually upgraded to 101-bed facilities to bring modern healthcare services to the people’s doorsteps. Necessary measures will be taken on an urgent basis to enhance the quality of medical services and ensure transparency and accountability within healthcare institutions.

During the inspection, the Health Minister toured various departments of the hospital. He expressed his displeasure upon witnessing various irregularities and instances of mismanagement.

He remarked, “The poor people of my country do not get essential medicines, yet here, expired medicines worth lakhs of taka are lying around.”

Government medicines were even found scattered in the hospital bathrooms. This is absolutely unacceptable.
