BGMEA, asset project trains over 4,600 RMG workers
A total of 2,328 apparel workers across 97 batches were awarded certificates on Saturday following the successful completion of specialized training under the Enterprise Based Training (EBT) initiative, a joint program by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the World Bank-funded ‘ASSET’ project.
The certificate distribution ceremony and progress review workshop were held at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, marking significant advancement in upskilling the country’s ready-made garment (RMG) workforce.
With this latest batch, the BGMEA-EBT program has so far trained 4,632 workers across 193 batches in three completed cycles. A fourth cycle involving 96 batches is currently operational to meet growing industry demand.
Addressing the ceremony as chief guest, Technical and Madrasah Education Division (TMED) Secretary Md. Dawood Miah underscored that building a highly skilled workforce is essential to reaching national economic milestones and maintaining resilience in international markets.
Highlighting RMG as Bangladesh’s largest employment-generating sector, Miah stated that elevating workers’ technical proficiency to Level 3 and Level 4 standards is critical for long-term global competitiveness.
He assured that government-backed skill initiatives will persist beyond December 2026, when the current project period ends, and urged BGMEA to provide strategic inputs to solidify industry-academia linkages.
Presiding over the event, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan emphasized that efficiency gains and modern factory practices are imperative to adapt to global market shifts and technological evolution.
He noted that BGMEA’s current leadership is prioritizing product value addition through human capital development rather than relying solely on expanding export volumes.
The ‘Accelerating and Strengthening Skills for Economic Transformation’ (ASSET) project, implemented by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) under the Ministry of Education, aims to foster industry-led, demand-driven training programs that boost manufacturing productivity.
The ceremony was attended by DTE Director General Abul Khair Md. Akkas Ali, TMED Additional Secretary Samsur Rahman Khan, ASSET Project Director Mir Zahid Hasan, BUFT Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan, BGMEA Director Nafis-Ud-Doula, and Skill Development Standing Committee Chairman Jabed Hossain Bhuiyan.
