IAB chief stresses values-based leadership

Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) Amir and Chormonai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim has said the government’s reluctance to implement the July Charter proves that it has failed to understand public expectations and sentiments.

“The people handed power to those they believed would prioritise national interests after July. But the government’s hesitation over implementing the July Charter shows that it has failed to understand the pulse of the people,” he said.

He made the remarks while addressing the 10th founding anniversary rally of Islami Jubo Andolan Bangladesh as the chief guest at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital on Friday.

The Chormonai Pir said the country’s progress depends on good leadership and sound policies.
“Without the combination of honest leadership and proper policies, the dreams of development, security and good governance will never be fulfilled,” he said.

He said the best principles of Islam could play a role in eliminating corruption, extortion and drug abuse from society.

Rezaul Karim also cautioned against misusing the name of Islam to justify unethical activities.

“Just as naming a dark-skinned person ‘Shada Mia’ does not make him white, committing immoral, disorderly or deceptive acts in the name of Islam does not make them Islamic,” he said.

He added that introducing alien cultural practices, unethical behaviour and un-Islamic activities in the name of religion only damages the image of Islam.
