Ministry alerts public over fake minister accounts

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has warned the public against several fake Facebook accounts and pages operating in the name of Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the ministry said the minister has only one verified Facebook account, marked with a blue verification badge, and has no connection with or endorsement of any other Facebook account or page.

The ministry expressed concern over the emergence of multiple fake accounts and pages using the minister’s name, identity and photograph to publish statements, misleading information and other content without his approval.

It described such activities as “completely illegal and unethical.”

The ministry urged the public not to rely on or share content published from those fake accounts and pages.

It also called on people to report the fake accounts to the relevant authorities.
