BSEC, IMF discuss expanding green bonds investment

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have discussed expanding green finance and developing thematic bond markets to strengthen climate-resilient investment through the country’s capital market.

The discussions took place at a meeting held at the BSEC Commission Boardroom on Tuesday between BSEC officials and the visiting IMF Climate Policy Diagnostic Technical Assistance Mission, according to a BSEC statement issued on Wednesday.

BSEC Commissioner Tanvir Habib Rehaman led the commission’s delegation, while the six-member IMF mission was headed by Team Leader Suphachol Suphachalasai.

During the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of expanding Green Bonds, Sustainability Bonds and other thematic financial instruments to mobilize investment for environmentally sustainable projects.

They also reviewed progress in developing Bangladesh’s Sustainable Finance Taxonomy and discussed aligning it with international standards to support the growth of the country’s sustainable finance market.

The discussions covered improvements to the regulatory and technical framework for thematic bonds, including certification procedures for issuers, impact reporting standards and external review mechanisms to enhance market credibility.

The meeting also assessed the preparedness of potential bond issuers and investor demand for climate-focused financial products, identifying these as key factors for the successful expansion of the market.

BSEC reiterated its commitment to strengthening policy frameworks, enhancing institutional capacity and working closely with international development partners to align Bangladesh’s capital market with global best practices in sustainable finance.
