‘It’s a conspiracy,’ Jamaat Satkhira MP alleges

A video allegedly showing Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam in a private setting with a woman has circulated widely on social media, prompting the Satkhira-4 MP to claim that the footage was recorded and released as part of a conspiracy.

The video began spreading online on Monday night. Its authenticity and context could not be independently verified.

In a statement posted on his Facebook account, Gazi Nazrul said the woman seen in the video was his second wife, Mosa Mariam Begum, whom he married on June 17 with the consent of both families, including his first wife.

He said he visited the business office of his second wife’s father, Md Masum Billah, in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area on July 13, accompanied by his two wives.

According to the MP, his driver and a relative of his second wife later entered the office with several unidentified people, confined those present and extorted Tk 1 lakh. He also alleged that further money was demanded after the rented vehicle used by him was detained.

Gazi Nazrul claimed the incident stemmed from a family dispute and previous enmity involving his second wife’s relative and her father.

He alleged that footage of a private moment between him and his wife was later circulated online to damage his reputation and falsely portray the incident as an extramarital relationship.

The MP urged the authorities to conduct a swift and impartial investigation and take legal action against those responsible for recording and circulating the video.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami said it was reviewing the allegations and related information.
In a statement on Tuesday, the party’s Assistant Secretary General and Central Publicity and Media Secretary Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair said necessary action would be taken in line with the organisation’s rules after the review was completed.
