AIIB looks to expand BD portfolio
A high-level delegation from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) on Sunday expressed interest in expanding investment and technical cooperation in Bangladesh’s transport and communication infrastructure, with both sides discussing a range of strategic connectivity projects.
The four-member delegation, led by Rajat Misra, Director General of AIIB’s Public Sector Clients Department (Region 1), held a courtesy meeting with Mohammad Abdur Rouf, Secretary of the Bridges Division and Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority.
Welcoming the delegation, Rouf highlighted the success and socio-economic impact of Bangladesh’s major infrastructure projects, including the Padma Bridge, Jamuna Bridge and Dhaka Elevated Expressway.
He said Bangladesh is moving towards developing world-class infrastructure under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed prospects for AIIB financing of environmentally sustainable and technology-driven transport infrastructure in line with the country’s long-term development priorities.
They expressed interest in investment opportunities across several major projects, including initiatives to reduce traffic congestion, modern toll management systems, the Dhaka-Chattogram Elevated Expressway, the Dhaka East-West Elevated Expressway, a subway network and a second Jamuna Bridge.
Rouf stressed that any financing package should be offered on affordable and sustainable terms that reflect Bangladesh’s socio-economic realities.
He also said regular technical-level engagement between the Bangladesh Bridge Authority and AIIB would continue to help accelerate the investment process.
The Bridges Division secretary requested AIIB to submit a formal written proposal outlining the proposed areas of investment and financing terms. The proposal will be reviewed before any further steps are taken, subject to government approval.
He reaffirmed the Bridge Authority’s commitment to implementing infrastructure projects with transparency and accountability, in line with the head of government’s policy commitment.
Speaking at the meeting, delegation leader Rajat Misra praised Bangladesh for moving beyond conventional approaches to infrastructure development through the successful application of modern technology.
Referring to Bangladesh’s growing economic importance in South Asia, he said AIIB is keen to build a long-term partnership with the country and deepen its engagement in future infrastructure development.
