At least five judicial aspirants were injured when a section of plaster from the balcony of the Bagerhat District and Sessions Judge Court building collapsed on Monday.
The incident occurred on the balcony in front of the Kachua Court of the Bagerhat District Judge Court. Exposed reinforcing rods were visible after the plaster fell, raising fears of a more serious accident if urgent repairs are not carried out.
The injured were rescued and admitted to the 250-bed Bagerhat Sadar Hospital. They were identified as Suman Das, Hridoy Haldar, Motaleb, Habibullah Sheikh and his father, Md Siraj Sheikh, all residents of different parts of Bagerhat district.
The injured said they were standing on the court balcony when plaster suddenly fell from the ceiling onto them.
Two of them sustained head injuries, while the others suffered injuries to their necks and legs.
Dr Asim Kumar Samaddar, superintendent of the 250-bed Bagerhat Sadar Hospital, said all five injured people were out of danger.
“Two patients required stitches to their heads, while the others sustained injuries to their necks and legs. They are receiving treatment and will be discharged after recovery,” he said.
Amit Kumar, a judge at the Bagerhat District Judge Court, said several people were injured when plaster suddenly fell from the ceiling.
“We have informed the Public Works Department (PWD). The department will conduct an on-site inspection and submit a report on whether the building is safe for continued use,” he said.
