Dhaka waste to power generate 42.5MW

The government plans to generate 42.5 megawatts of electricity by August 2028 by processing around 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste produced daily in Dhaka.

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Information and Broadcasting Dr Zahed Ur Rahman disclosed the plan at a press briefing at the Press Information Department conference room on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman chaired a meeting at the Secretariat on Sunday to review two waste-to-energy projects at Aminbazar under Dhaka North City Corporation and Matuail under Dhaka South City Corporation.

Chinese company CMEC Group will invest in constructing the waste-to-energy power plant at Aminbazar.

The plant will process approximately 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste each day and generate 42.5MW of electricity. The government aims to begin supplying electricity from the facility to the national grid by August 2028. Zahed said the plant is expected to continue producing electricity for 25 years.

Meanwhile, Dhaka South City Corporation has introduced a digital waste-management system called “Clean Care” as part of efforts to modernise urban sanitation services.

DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam inaugurated the application at a programme at Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday.

City residents will be able to use the application to lodge complaints directly about waste collection and cleanliness. The system is expected to help the authorities address complaints more quickly and efficiently.

The adviser also said poor waste management had left the Aminbazar-Hemayetpur highway stretch littered for a long time.

After the issue drew the prime minister’s attention, the government decided to coordinate with the Dhaka district administration to remove the waste, improve environmental cleanliness and plant neem saplings along both sides of the highway.
