Jaya Ahsan’s latest film, ‘Aajo Ardhangini’, has been released in theatres. Directed by Kaushik Ganguly, the film is the sequel to the 2023 critically acclaimed ‘Ardhangini’.
Reprising her role from the original, Jaya once again portrays Meghna.
The film explores the complexities of relationships, marital conflict, emotional scars from the past, and the intricacies of human psychology.
Reflecting on her character’s journey, Jaya said, “Meghna’s world has changed significantly over time. She is now an accepted and valued member of the family.
New people have entered her life, just as new people enter our lives as time passes.
Her child has also grown up. Altogether, I feel Meghna’s character has become much broader and deeper in ‘Aajo Ardhangini’ than it was in ‘Ardhangini’.”
Speaking about the film’s central theme, Jaya said, “What touches me the most is the entire concept of ‘Ardhangini’. The word ‘Ardhangini’ has been used very consciously.
From a feminist perspective, we often question why a woman should be referred to as the ‘better half’. I don’t think that’s right.
A woman’s true identity lies in her individuality. She is first and foremost a human being, and then a woman. To me, that is the film’s most important message, and it explores that idea with great depth.”
She also noted that audiences do not need to have seen the first film to appreciate the sequel. “Those who haven’t watched the previous film will have no difficulty understanding this one.
It stands on its own and can be fully enjoyed as an independent film,” she said.
When asked what she considers the film’s greatest strength-the story, the performances, or Kaushik Ganguly’s direction-Jaya replied, “Aajo Ardhangini has many strengths.
Above all, I would highlight Kaushik Ganguly’s writing. Then there is the way female strength has been woven into the narrative. And, of course, his direction.
The way he understands human relationships, emotions, and the subtle nuances of life is truly extraordinary.
I believe very few filmmakers can tell stories about relationships the way he does. When actors are given such powerful dialogues and beautifully written characters, strong performances come naturally.”
Filming for ‘Aajo Ardhangini’ began in June last year. After a long wait, the film was finally released in cinemas across West Bengal on Friday.
