Info Minister calls for moral education

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Saturday stressed the need to combine moral and ethical education with textbook-based learning to develop students into responsible and worthy citizens.

He said education should nurture students’ creativity, confidence and values alongside academic excellence, as he addressed the foundation stone-laying ceremony of a four-storey academic building at Nalchira Secondary School in Gournadi upazila as the chief guest.

“Education should not be limited to textbooks alone. Alongside academic learning, students must be given education on moral values and ethics,” the minister said. Swapon said quality education creates opportunities for every student to develop their talents and abilities, while a traditional learning system often limits creativity and self-confidence.

He urged teachers, parents and students to work together to ensure quality education and instil ethical values, patriotism and social responsibility among the younger generation.

The minister also called on all stakeholders to make effective use of the government’s education development initiatives.

Describing educational institutions as “beacons of knowledge”, Swapon said teachers are the torchbearers of that knowledge and their experience and dedication play a vital role in national development.

Expressing hope that the new academic building would improve the school’s educational environment, he said the additional infrastructure would strengthen teaching and learning activities.

The minister also highlighted the importance of sports alongside formal education, saying regular participation in games contributes to physical fitness, mental development, discipline, teamwork and leadership skills.

After laying the foundation stone, Swapon planted a tree sapling on the school campus.
The programme was presided over by Nalchira Secondary School Headmaster Nurul Alam.

Executive Engineer of the Barishal Education Engineering Department Shahidul Islam, former school president Abdul Sattar Mridha, managing committee member Al Mamun Swapan and others attended the ceremony.
