Tigers take upper hand against Aussies
Opener Tanzid Hasan hit a century as the Bangladesh took the upper hand against Australia on day 2 of the first Test at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin of Australia on Friday.
The Tigers piled up 351 for the loss of six wickets in reply to the Aussies paltry total of 198 in the first innings. Bangladesh led by 153 runs.
Tanzid Hasan notched up a marvelous 101. His 197-ball innings was laced with eight fours and a sixer. Tanzid Hasan is the first Bangladesh batter, who scored a century in Australia soil. It was Tanzid Hasan’s maiden century in Test cricket.
Bangladesh resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 96 for the loss of one wicket.
Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 32 and 35 runs respectively.
Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque could add more 42 runs as Mominul Haque was caught by Alex Corey off Josh Hazlewood when the Tigers’ total was 138 for the loss of two wickets.
Mominul Haque was deprived from a half-century for just one run. Mominul Haque made 49 from 85 deliveries including eight fours.
After Mominul’s dismissal, Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto put on together 93 runs for the third wicket partnership before Tanzid was caught at the long-off by Mitchell Starc off Nathan Lyon when Bangladesh’s score was 231 for the loss of three wickets.
After Tanzid’s departure, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim built a worthy partnership scoring together 66 runs in the fourth wicket stand before Shanto was caught at the second slip by Steven Smith off Josh Hazlewood when the tourists’ total was 297 for the loss of four wickets.
Shanto hit a Captain’s knock of 84. His 126-ball innings was laced with seven fours and a sixer. Shanto reached his seventh fifty-run landmark using 74 balls with five fours. After Shanto’s departure, Litton Das arrived at the crease.
But his innings was short-lived as Litton Das (0) was caught at the second slip by Steven Smith off Mitchell Starc when Bangladesh’s score was 306 for the loss of five wickets.
After Litton’s dismissal, Mushfiqur Rahim could not stay at the pitch for a long period as he was caught at the second slip by Steven Smith off Pat Cummins when the touring side’s total was 308 for the loss of six wickets.
Mushfiqur Rahim scored 36 from 55 balls including five fours.
Fourth-down Mehidy Hasan Miraz and fifth-down Hasan Mahmud fought back adding together 43 runs for the unbroken seventh-wicket stand before the bails were drawn for the second day play.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz remined unbeaten with 32 runs, while Hasan Mahmud remained unbeaten with 13 runs. Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc bagged a pair of wickets each conceding 68 runs each.
Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon took one wicket each for 50 and 92 runs respectively.
