Jamaat ameer urges support for flood victims

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Friday urged people from all sections of society to stand beside communities affected by severe flooding.

He said four of the country’s eight divisions had been badly affected, leaving residents in extremely difficult conditions.

“Standing by flood-affected people is now a humanitarian responsibility for everyone,” he said.
Shafiqur made the remarks at a meeting at a community centre in Banshkhali after visiting flood-hit areas in Banshkhali and Satkania.

Referring to the party’s relief activities, he said Jamaat viewed its assistance not simply as relief, but as a gesture of solidarity with affected families.

He announced that families of each person who died in the ongoing floods in Chattogram Division would receive Tk50,000 in financial assistance within three days. Shafiqur said providing adequate support to affected people from public resources was a constitutional responsibility of the government.

He also called for transparency in the distribution of government and private relief, stressing that assistance intended for flood victims must reach those genuinely affected.

Jamaat Assistant Secretary General and Chattogram Regional Director Maulana Mohammad Shahjahan, Central Working Committee member Shahjahan Chowdhury MP, Chattogram city Ameer Muhammad Nazrul Islam, Chattogram South District Ameer Anwarul Alam Chowdhury and Maulana Zahirul Islam MP were among those present.
