A BNP Swechchhasebak Dal leader was seriously injured after being shot by miscreants in the capital’s Mirpur area on Tuesday night.
The injured man was identified as Saiful Islam Siju, joint convener of the Swechchhasebak Dal unit under Mirpur Police Station.
The shooting took place beneath Chourangi Market at Mirpur-10, according to police and local witnesses.
Locals rescued Siju and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he is now undergoing treatment. Police said a youth named Shanto Bhuiyan was arrested in connection with the incident. A firearm was also recovered from him.
According to witnesses, Siju was standing in front of his office when three to four men allegedly opened fire on him. He was hit in the waist and both legs and collapsed on the spot.
Locals chased the attackers as they tried to flee and managed to catch Shanto Bhuiyan. They later informed police, who went to the scene, took him into custody and launched an operation in the surrounding area.
Police said they recovered a foreign-made revolver and four rounds of ammunition from the suspect.
Law enforcers said further investigation into the incident is underway.
