Sajek floods strand over 500 tourists

More than 500 tourists have been stranded in Sajek as several parts of the Khagrachhari-Sajek road went under floodwater following continuous rainfall, halting vehicular movement on the route.

The tourists, who had been staying in Sajek on Tuesday and were scheduled to return on Wednesday, could not leave the area due to the road disruption.

Rahul Chakma Jon, organising secretary of the Cottage and Resort Owners Association of Sajek, confirmed the matter on Wednesday.

He said tourists who arrived in Sajek on Tuesday were now stranded. They were supposed to return to Khagrachhari on Wednesday morning, but vehicles could not operate as floodwater submerged several points of the Khagrachhari-Sajek road.

“If the water level goes down by the afternoon, arrangements will be made to send them back safely,” he said.

Rahul Chakma Jon also said the administration had imposed restrictions on tourist travel to Sajek due to the weather conditions. As a result, no tourist vehicle left Khagrachhari for Sajek on Wednesday morning.

“Tourists will be able to visit Sajek again once the situation returns to normal,” he added.
