Tigers tame Australia in Darwin

Bangladesh produced one of the most memorable results in their Test history on Sunday, defeating Australia by nine wickets at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin to secure their first-ever Test victory over Australia on Australian soil.

The emphatic win, achieved on the fourth day of the first Test, gave Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the series and marked a landmark moment since the Tigers gained Test status in 2000.

The historic victory drew congratulations from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque and the Bangladesh Cricket Board, who hailed the Tigers’ landmark achievement against Australia.

Paceman Hasan Mahmud was the architect of the victory, delivering a superb bowling performance across both innings.

He claimed six wickets for 55 runs in Australia’s first innings and returned with three for 56 in the second. His match figures earned him the Player of the Match award.

Australia, opting to bat first, were dismissed for 198 on the opening day. Bangladesh responded with a commanding 426, with opener Tanzid Hasan hitting an impressive 101 to give the visitors a substantial first-innings advantage.

Australia began their second innings on Sunday at 161-4, with Cameron Green on 43 and Alex Carey on 19.

Carey added 11 before being caught behind for 30 by Litton Das off Mehidy Hasan Miraz, leaving Australia 178-5.

Miraz then bowled Beau Webster for five at 193-6 before dismissing Pat Cummins for eight, caught at short leg by Shadman Islam, with the hosts on 207-7.

Taskin Ahmed removed Mitchell Starc for 18, caught behind by Litton Das, as Australia slipped to 250-8.

Hasan Mahmud then ended Green’s resistance, bowling him for a magnificent 104 to leave Australia 278-9.

Green’s 201-ball century, which included four fours and a six, was his third Test hundred and provided the main resistance in Australia’s second innings.

Miraz completed the innings by trapping Nathan Lyon lbw for 15, with Australia bowled out for 284.

Miraz finished with five wickets for 66 runs, while Taijul Islam and Taskin Ahmed took one wicket each for 51 and 66 respectively.

Bangladesh’s chase of 57 got off to a shaky start when Tanzid Hasan was bowled by Josh Hazlewood for a duck with only four runs on the board.

But Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque steadied the innings, putting together an unbeaten 53-run second-wicket partnership to take Bangladesh home.

Mominul remained unbeaten on 30, while Shadman finished on 25. Hazlewood took the only Bangladeshi wicket, conceding no runs.
