



A Dhaka University student has been hacked to death along with her mother and sister in Raipur upazila of Laxmipur district on Thursday. Another sister, college student Ikra Akter, was also critically attacked and died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, a young man accused of carrying out the attack was beaten to death by an angry mob.
The incident occurred around 10:30 AM in the Godown Road area of Ward No. 3 of Raipur Municipality. 6 to 7 police officers were injured by bricks and stones thrown by the agitated people. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.
The deceased are: mother Shahinur Begum (38), eldest daughter and Dhaka University student Sayma Akter (21), and younger daughter Shifa Akter (19). The injured Ikra Akter was a twelfth-grade student at Raipur Kazi Faruki College. Their father, Kamal Hossain, died in 2019 after being electrocuted by a wire lying on a road in Kerowa village.
The accused young man killed in the mob beating has been identified as Antor Majumdar, son of Kartik Majumdar, a resident of Subarnachar in Noakhali district. The bodies of the deceased have been kept at Raipur and Sadar Hospital morgues.
The middle daughter, Ikra Akter, was rescued in critical condition but died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
According to police and locals, Shahinur had been living in a rented house at the scene with her children for several years. The family’s original home is in Comilla district. Her husband, Md. Kamal, died from electrocution several years ago, after which Shahinur had been living there with her three daughters and one son.
Superintendent of Police Abu Tarek confirmed the deaths of four individuals and stated that the cause of the incident is still unknown, with an investigation underway.
On Thursday morning, the young man entered the house and attacked Shahinur and her three daughters with a sharp weapon. The mother and the youngest daughter died at the scene. The eldest daughter, Sayma, was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. Ikra was transferred to Dhaka in critical condition but did not survive.
Following the attack, locals accused the young man and beat him severely. He was admitted to Sadar Hospital with serious injuries but died there, according to the attending physician.
Police later arrived and attempted to restore order, during which the agitated crowd pelted them with bricks and stones, injuring seven officers. Superintendent of Police Abu Tarek visited the scene after receiving news of the incident.
Raipur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Baharul Alam stated that five people were brought to the hospital in injured condition, of whom two daughters and their mother died.
One daughter was sent to Dhaka in critical condition. All victims had sharp weapon wounds on various parts of their bodies. The accused was also brought in after the mob attack, with sharp weapon injuries to his head.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Raipur Circle) Md. Abdur Rashed confirmed three deaths at the hospital, with one person sent to Dhaka. The accused young man was beaten by the mob and died on the way to Sadar Hospital. Seven police officers were injured when the crowd threw bricks during attempts to control the situation.
Superintendent of Police Abu Tarek confirmed four deaths and stated that the motive remains unknown, with an investigation ongoing.
