Bangladesh Postal employees in Sapahar upazila of Naogaon district went on a strike demanding a three-fold increase in salary and allowances and recognition as departmental employees.
As part of the 3-day programme like the rest of the country, employees at all post offices in the upazila participated in the strike at the scheduled time on Tuesday and called for the speedy implementation of their just demands.
Employee leaders said that although various demands including salary and allowance increases, ensuring job security, recruitment of manpower for vacant posts and improvement of working environment have been raised with the concerned authorities for a long time, they have not been effectively resolved. As a result, they have been forced to go on a strike to realize their demands.
During the strike, the employees said that their demands are reasonable and a reflection of long-standing deprivation.
They also warned that more stringent agitation programs will be announced in the future if the demands are not implemented quickly.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the postal service activities of the upazila have been partially disrupted due to the strike. However, the sources concerned said that necessary measures have been taken to keep the emergency services running.
The employees expressed the hope that the concerned authorities will consider their demands seriously and take effective steps quickly and end the ongoing deadlock.
In order to make the strike program a success, an emergency meeting was organised on Monday on the Sapahar post office premises at the initiative of the Bangladesh Postal Employees Union Sapahar branch.
Central Committee Senior Vice President Badal Hossain, Vice President Aminul Islam Ranju and all the employees of the upazila were present in it
