Measles claims 2 more lives

Two more people have died with measles symptoms in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, with one death reported in Dhaka Division and another in Sylhet.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) also reported 107 new confirmed measles cases during the period from 8am Monday to 8am Tuesday.

In its bulletin issued Tuesday, the DGHS said 107 people tested positive for measles during the 24-hour period.

Health authorities have been publishing measles-related data since March 15.

So far, 98 deaths have been recorded among confirmed measles patients, while another 782 people have died after developing measles-like symptoms.

Dhaka Division has reported the highest number of deaths among people with measles symptoms, with 342, followed by Sylhet with 125. Rajshahi has reported 91 deaths, Chattogram 61, Barishal 46, Mymensingh 72, Khulna 32 and Rangpur 13.

The DGHS said 872 people with measles symptoms visited hospitals across the country in the past 24 hours, while 812 were admitted for treatment.

Of those admitted, 292 were in Dhaka Division, 24 in Rajshahi, 92 in Sylhet, 260 in Chattogram, 133 in Barishal, 47 in Mymensingh, 55 in Khulna and nine in Rangpur.

The total number of measles patients admitted to hospitals across the country has now reached 120,134, of whom 115,980 have been discharged.

According to the DGHS, the number of suspected measles patients in Bangladesh has risen to 138,184, while confirmed cases stand at 17,385.
