Ad-Din hospital’s licence cancelled

The license of Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar, Dhaka, has been cancelled following an unsatisfactory explanation regarding the deaths of six newborns at the facility, authorities said on Thursday.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Director General Professor Dr. Probhat Chandra Biswas announced the decision at a press briefing, stating that the matter had been taken with “utmost seriousness.”

“Taking the deaths of six newborns with utmost seriousness, the decision has been made to cancel the license of Ad-Din Hospital,” he said.

The hospital has also been instructed to immediately transfer all currently admitted patients to other healthcare facilities to ensure uninterrupted treatment.

Earlier, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain expressed dissatisfaction with the hospital’s explanation regarding the incident and indicated that legal action would follow if the response was found unsatisfactory.

A DGHS investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the deaths and identify those responsible. Officials said appropriate legal action will be taken once responsibility is established.

The incident occurred on May 27 at Ad-Din Hospital in Moghbazar, when six newborns died between 6:00am and 9:00am, prompting the formation of a probe committee and issuance of a show-cause notice to the hospital authorities.

The hospital’s owner, Sheikh Mohiuddin, was asked to explain why the license should not be cancelled within 72 hours, with a deadline of June 7.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court lawyer Shishir Manir, representing the hospital, had earlier stated that the institution agreed to provide Tk80 lakh compensation to the families of each of the six deceased infants, following discussions with the affected families.

The DGHS said the investigation remains ongoing and further action will be taken in accordance with the law once the findings are complete.
