Govt extends shopping hours to 9pm
In a move expected to benefit both retailers and shoppers, the government has revised the operating hours of shopping malls, markets and retail outlets across the country, allowing them to remain open until 9pm from today.
The Power Division announced the decision in a notification issued on Thursday, stating that the approved operating schedule for these establishments will now be from 11am to 9pm.
The revised timing relaxes restrictions introduced earlier this month. Under a government directive that came into effect on June 1, shopping malls, markets and shops had been instructed to close by 7pm instead of their previous closing time of 10pm as part of efforts to reduce electricity consumption.
According to the latest order, the extended hours will also apply to fairs, trade fairs and cultural programmes taking place or scheduled across the country.
However, restaurants, hospitals, pharmacies and other essential service providers will continue to remain exempt from the restrictions.
The Power Division also directed the relevant authorities to ensure that illuminated billboards are switched off by 9pm.
Organisers of fairs, trade fairs and cultural events have likewise been instructed to conclude their activities by 9pm.
The earlier restrictions were introduced to promote efficient electricity use and ensure a stable power supply during periods of heightened demand. Authorities said the latest decision reflects adjustments made in consideration of the current power situation.
