8-day theatre festival at Shilpakala Academy

Several theatre groups have brought new plays to the stage in 2025. The Department of Drama and Film of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has organised an eight-day theatre festival with selected plays.

The festival, titled ‘New Drama Festival’, will begin on June 12 and end on June 19, said a press release. The new drama festival is being sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Plays will be performed at the Experimental Theater Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) from June 12 to 19 at 7:00pm every day.

‘Chorer Naam Charandas’ will be performed on the opening day. The play is presented by Dinajpur Natya Samity.

The play is directed by Nayan Bartel. The second day, on June 13, is the play ‘Rina Pung’ by Bandarban’s Young Bonghung Theatre, which is directed by Singyang Mro. ‘Oedipus’, a production of the Dramatic Theatre Group, will be seen on June 14. Oedipus, an immortal work by Greek playwright Sophocles, has been directed by Habib Masud.

Hunt Theatre’s ‘Café the Vault’ will be screened on June 15. The play’s original idea, story and direction are by Diana Marilyn Chowdhury. The screenplay is by Abid Hasan. Prachyanat’s play ‘Bytikrom O Niyom’ will be shown on June 16.

The play, which is based on German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s famous play ‘The Exception and the Rule’, has been translated by Shahidul Mamun and directed by Azad Abul Kalam. Dhaka Theatre’s ‘Rongmohol’ will be performed on June 17.

Written by Dr Rubaiyat Ahmed, the play has been directed by noted actor Faruk Ahmed. This is the first play he has directed.
