MPs’ personal assts key to boosting democracy

Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni on Tuesday said that personal assistants to Members of Parliament (MPs) play a vital role in strengthening grassroots democracy and making the parliamentary system more effective and dynamic.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an orientation programme for MPs’ personal assistants held at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in Dhaka.

Moni said the orientation reflects participants’ willingness to learn laws, rules and regulations, as well as their commitment to democratic practices and institutional development.

He noted that parliamentary assistants contribute significantly to ensuring continuity in democratic processes and supporting an active Parliament. According to him, the effectiveness of MPs often depends on the competence and guidance of their personal assistants.

“MPs place a great deal of trust in their personal assistants and often listen to their advice. It is your responsibility to help keep them on the right path,” he said, adding that they also bear moral responsibility for the actions of the lawmakers they serve.

Referring to the national budget, the Chief Whip said it represents the hopes and aspirations of the people rather than just financial figures. He urged assistants to study the budget carefully and help MPs ensure fair distribution of public resources for development and welfare.

National Adviser to the European Union Dr Khandaker Golam Moazzem delivered the welcome address at the programme, which was chaired by Parliament Secretariat Secretary Barrister Md Golam Sorwar Bhuiyan.
