Classes being taken place in open field
The plaster on roof of the class room of Dakshin Maijhati Government Primary School in Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj has fallen off.
The matter came to light soon after the school opened last Sunday after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays. The building has three classrooms. Due to the fear of an accident, classes are being held outside the building and on mats spread out in the open field.
Dakshin Majihati Primary School , was established in 1988. According to sources, the one-story building had been in a dilapidated condition for a long time. The plaster on various parts of the roof had cracked and rods were protruding. The condition of the walls was also dilapidated.
The classroom environment was damp and unhygienic. Some renovations had been done in between.
There are five teachers in Primary school of 109 students. Headmaster Suraiya Bilkis said that the school opened for the first time last Sunday after the Eid closure.
When she went to the school building in the morning and unlocked it, she saw large pieces of broken flooring scattered on the floor inside the building. There was no environment for teaching in this risky building.
That is why since Sunday, they have been continuing to teach under the open sky by spreading mats outside. Even if it rains, that is not possible. School Headmaster submitted a written application to the Upazila Primary Education Office on Monday to declare the school building abandoned.
Giving this information, Suraiya Bilkis further said that she had submitted a written application to the Education Office about three years ago after seeing the risky condition of the building.
At that time, some repairs were made at a cost Tk 4 lakh . But during the closure, a large part of the plaster of the roof collapsed.UNO of Pakundia, Rupam Das visited the school on Tuesday noon
Upazila Primary Education Officer (UPEO)of Pakundia, Taslima Begum Lipi said that she visited the school last Sunday after hearing the news of the roof collapse.
For now, no classes are being held here. School Headmaster has been asked to take initiatives to hold classes by making other arrangements locally.
She assured that the school building will be declared abandoned and a new building will be constructed after taking the opinion of the engineer”
