6 gamblers held in Atwari

In a drive against gambling, Atwari Police in Panchagarh arrested six gamblers on Sunday night (June 7).

The arrests were made during a raid at Uttara Bazar in Marjipur Union of the upazila while the accused were allegedly engaged in gambling.

The arrested individuals are: Ansiur Rahman (45), son of late Tafji Uddin; Abdul Halim (48), son of late Islam Uddin; Md. Islam (48), son of late Satya Haque; Nuruzzaman (40), son of Saifur Rahman; Enamul Haque (46), son of late Basri Uddin; and Akhtar Hossain (45), son of late Basri Uddin.

According to police, acting on the instructions of Atwari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Matiyar Rahman, a police team conducted a raid at a secluded area adjacent to Uttara Bazar in Marjipur Union following a tip-off.

During the operation, the six individuals were arrested on the spot, and gambling materials, including playing cards and gambling boards, were seized.

Confirming the arrests, OC Md. Matiyar Rahman said the operation was part of the police’s regular efforts to prevent crime and maintain law and order in the area.

He added that cases have been filed against the arrested individuals under the relevant gambling laws, and they have been sent to jail through the court.

The OC further stated that gambling is a social menace that negatively affects young people and creates various problems within families and society. He assured that Atwari Police would continue its strict campaign against gambling, drugs, and other criminal activities.
