2 killed in Chakaria Highway crash

A child and a bus driver were killed, while at least 21 others were injured in a horrific road accident on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Highway in Chakaria Upazila on Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred at around 3:00 pm on June 8 in the Medhakachchhapiya area of Khutakhali Union, near the border between Dulahazara South and Khutakhali unions.

According to police and local sources, two passenger buses-an inter-district Evergreen bus and a Chakaria Service bus-collided head-on, triggering the deadly accident.

A child named Yahia died on the spot, while another victim, believed to be one of the bus drivers, succumbed to injuries while being taken to the hospital.
The identities and addresses of the deceased had not been confirmed at the time of reporting.

At least 21 passengers were injured in the crash, including around 10 who sustained serious injuries. Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

Rescue teams and local residents rushed to the scene and transported the injured to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex and nearby hospitals for treatment.

Mahbubur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Malumghat Highway Police Station, confirmed the fatalities and said that many of the injured remain in critical condition.

“The child died at the scene, while another person died on the way to the hospital. We suspect the second victim was one of the drivers,” he said.
Police have seized both vehicles involved in the accident, and further investigation is underway.
