Father killed for protesting obscene remarks on daughter

A tea worker named Chaitanya Goala died after allegedly being punched by his neighbor following a dispute over obscene remarks made to his daughter in Sylhet.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at Jaflong Tea Garden in Gowainghat Upazila of Sylhet.

The accused, Suman Pradhan, 42, was arrested on Sunday (June 7) and sent to court. The body of the deceased was handed over to his family after an autopsy.

According to police and local sources, Chaitanya Goala and Suman Pradhan were neighbors and worked as tea garden laborers.

On Saturday afternoon, after Chaitanya’s daughter came out of a pond following a bath, Suman allegedly made obscene remarks toward her.

When Chaitanya protested, an argument broke out between the two men, which later escalated into a physical altercation.

Suman allegedly punched Chaitanya, causing him to lose consciousness.
He was rushed to the Upazila Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Following the incident, Chaitanya’s wife filed a case with Gowainghat Police Station. Police later arrested the accused.

Shailen Dev, a member of Madhya Jaflong Union Parishad, told Khabarer Kagoj that Chaitanya and Suman lived next door to each other and maintained a close relationship.

Both worked as tea laborers, and members of their families used the same pond for bathing.

According to him, an argument broke out over remarks made to Chaitanya’s daughter, which eventually turned into a fight.

During the altercation, Suman punched Chaitanya, who later lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Gowainghat Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) and investigating officer Fayez Uddin said Suman allegedly made obscene comments to Chaitanya’s daughter while he and Chaitanya were sitting together on the stairs of a house.

When Chaitanya protested, Suman punched him near his left ear. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The accused has since been arrested and produced before the court.
