Ramisa murder verdict today
The verdict in the case filed over the brutal murder of 8-year-old child Ramisa Akter in Pallabi, Dhaka, will be announced today.
Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal will deliver the verdict.
The prosecution has expressed hope for the maximum punishment – the death penalty – for accused Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter.
On Saturday, June 6, Special Public Prosecutor for the state Azizur Rahman Dulu said, “Through the evidence presented, we have been able to prove the charge of murdering victim Ramisa against accused Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter.
We hope the Tribunal will, in its own discretion, award the maximum punishment of death penalty to the accused.”
The state-appointed defense lawyer Musa Kalimullah said, “We are expecting justice.”
Earlier, on Thursday, Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal set Sunday, June 7, as the date for the verdict after the conclusion of arguments.
On June 1, Judge Masrur Salekin framed charges against the accused. Of the 18 witnesses listed in the charge sheet, 16 testified before the Tribunal.
On May 20, the primary accused Sohel Rana (30) gave a confessional statement admitting guilt before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaed’s court. On the same day, the court also ordered Sohel’s wife Swapna Akter (26) to be sent to jail.
After completing the investigation, on May 24, the investigating officer of the case and Sub-Inspector Ahiduzzaman of Pallabi Police Station submitted the charge sheet against them before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque’s court.
On the same day, Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal took cognizance of the charge sheet.
