Hridoy creates history

Middle order batter Tawhid Hridoy made history on Wednesday by becoming the first Bangladeshi to score a triple century in first class cricket outside the country.

The right-handed batter reached 300 while playing for Bangladesh A against South Africa A in Potchefstroom, becoming only the third Bangladeshi after Rakibul Hasan and Tamim Iqbal to score a triple century in first class cricket.

Hridoy’s marathon innings came as Bangladesh A sought to overhaul the local side’s imposing first innings total of 512.

Having remained unbeaten on 274 at lunch on Day 4, with Bangladesh A on 576-8, Hridoy continued to anchor the innings alongside the tailenders after the interval.

He eventually completed his triple century, giving Bangladesh a commanding response to South Africa A total while also etching his name into the country’s first class record books.

Hridoy had earlier registered his maiden double century in the match and remained unbeaten at the close of the third day.

The innings was particularly significant given the conditions and match situation. Batting for a prolonged period on South African soil, where pace and bounce can pose a stern challenge, Hridoy combined patience and control with aggressive strokeplay to carry Bangladesh A to earn them a significant lead.

The 24-year-old has already established himself as a regular in Bangladesh’s limited-overs setup. His historic red-ball performance could further strengthen his credentials for a future Test call-up.
