Ivy returns home, police increase watch
Police have tightened surveillance around the Narayanganj residence of former mayor Selina Hayat Ivy following her release from jail, with CC
Ivy was released from Kashimpur Central Women’s Prison in Gazipur around 10:10pm on Wednesday after spending nearly 13 months in jail in connection with 12 cases filed over murder and attempted murder during the anti-discrimination student movement.
After her release, she returned to her ancestral home, “Chunka Kutir,” in Narayanganj’s Deobhog area.A large number of police personnel were seen stationed in front of her residence on Thursday.
Tarek Al Mehedi, additional superintendent of police for crime in Narayanganj, said the measures were taken partly for Ivy’s security and partly for monitoring the situation.
“As a former mayor, we are considering her security arrangements,” he said.
“At the same time, we are monitoring to ensure that she does not get involved in any activities of the banned organisation and that no one attempts to provoke or mobilise support in her favour under that banner,” he added.
The police official said Ivy can carry out her normal activities while on bail, but she cannot participate in any political programme under the banner of the banned organisation.
He also confirmed that plainclothes police have been deployed in the area.
Asked about the installation of CCTV cameras near Ivy’s residence, Tarek said the move was part of a broader security plan for Narayanganj.
“This is not centred only on her house. We have a broader plan to bring Narayanganj under CCTV coverage to curb crime. Around 2,000 cameras will be installed across the district,” he said.
Police said they would continue monitoring the area to maintain law and order and prevent any political gathering under a banned banner.
