China to build thousand-bed hospital in Sylhet
China is going to build a 1,000-bed modern specialised hospital in Sylhet as part of a major infrastructure development initiative aimed at improving healthcare services in Bangladesh.
For this purpose, a Chinese investment delegation has visited various areas in Companiganj, Sylhet, to select a suitable location and assess feasibility.
Stoward Cheong, chairman of the Chinese investment company “Buy Up Investment Limited,” accompanied by Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury, visited several potential sites, including Sylhet Hi-Tech Park and Sadapathar, on Wednesday (June 3), from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
After the visit, Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury said that the formal process for the hospital construction project has begun. China will fully invest in the project. Once the hospital is built, the people of the region will benefit, and it will add a new dimension to healthcare services.
Stoward Cheong, chairman of the Chinese investment firm Buy Up Investment Limited, said, “Sylhet needs a hospital considering its geographical location and healthcare needs. We are optimistic about the initial site inspection and feasibility assessment. We will do our best to ensure the necessary financing.”
Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet, Md. Sarwar Alam; Upazila Executive Officer Mohammad Robin Mia; Assistant Commissioner (Land) Palash Talukder; senior officials of the local administration; and local BNP leaders were present on the occasion.
Earlier, the Labour Minister and the Chinese investment team agreed on possible site selection, project scope, and the investment structure of the hospital at the Sylhet Circuit House on Tuesday night.
