HC grants Dipu Moni bail in one case, rejects six
The High Court on Tuesday granted ad-interim bail to former Awami League minister Dipu Moni in one case but refused to grant her bail in six others.
The court, however, issued separate rules asking the state to explain why she should not be granted bail in the six cases filed over murders during the July 2024 Uprising.
The bench of Justice Md Khairul Alam and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order and issued the rules after hearing separate petitions filed by Dipu Moni last month seeking bail in seven cases.
Deputy Attorney General Hemayet Ullah said the High Court granted bail in the case where Dipu Moni’s name was not mentioned in the first information report. In the remaining six cases, where her name was mentioned, the court issued rules instead of granting bail.
Dipu Moni’s lawyer Md Ramzan Ali Sikder said he would take steps to hold hearings on the High Court rules after the Supreme Court reopens following the ongoing vacation.
Both the Appellate Division and the High Court Division of the Supreme Court are scheduled to reopen on June 7.
Dipu Moni was arrested from Dhaka’s Baridhara area on August 19, 2024.
Advocate Ramzan said she has been implicated in around 60 cases filed on various charges, including murder, crimes against humanity, corruption and incitement to violence.
He added that there is no possibility of her release from jail at this stage.
