Govt warns against obstructing journalists

The government will maintain a zero-tolerance policy against any attempt to obstruct or interfere with the work of mainstream media professionals, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon said on Monday.

His remarks came amid concerns over a reported incident in which journalists were allegedly assaulted by security personnel and cleaners while gathering information at a private institution.

Responding to demands for justice and greater protection for media workers, the minister acknowledged that the safety of journalists appeared not to have been adequately ensured at the institution and said further details were being collected.

Swapon emphasized that journalists play a vital role in ensuring transparency and public accountability by bringing information from all sectors of society to the public. He said supporting media professionals in carrying out this responsibility is a shared duty of both the state and society.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to an independent media environment, the minister noted that mainstream media representatives recently informed the Prime Minister that they were able to perform their duties without government pressure or control.

He also assured journalists that they would not face harassment or be targeted with false cases without clear evidence, despite the government’s ongoing efforts to address numerous cases arising from recent political unrest. According to the minister, any proven wrongdoing would be handled strictly under existing laws.

Swapon thanked mainstream media outlets for what he described as their responsible role during the government’s first 100 days in office and extended Eid-ul-Azha greetings to journalists and citizens across the country.
