Ramisa murder probe enters final stage

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday pledged that the killer of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter would face the death penalty within one month, while also warning that unnamed groups were attempting to exploit the incident to create political instability and undermine the newly elected government.

“The government will ensure the highest punishment for Ramisa’s killer within the next one month, Insha’Allah.

That highest punishment is the death penalty,” the Prime Minister said while addressing a national programme in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh, marking the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Meanwhile, investigation into the rape and murder case of Ramisa Akter in Pallabi, Dhaka, has entered its final stages after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) handed over key forensic findings to the investigating officer.

According to CID sources, DNA, autopsy and viscera reports have been collected and formally delivered to SI Ahiduzzaman Bhuiyan Nipun of Pallabi Police Station, the investigating officer of the case.

CID Special Superintendent of Police (Media) Jasim Uddin Khan confirmed that the forensic reports had been handed over, adding that all required scientific findings had now been provided to the investigation team.

Sources close to the investigation said that, following receipt of the reports, preparation of the charge sheet is underway and it may be submitted to court as early as Sunday if the process proceeds as planned.

Separately, the Ministry of Law has appointed Advocate Azizur Rahman Dulu as Special Public Prosecutor for the case.

The appointment, issued under Section 492 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, assigns him to conduct the state’s case in Pallabi Police Station Case No.

35 (dated 20/05/2026), filed under Sections 9(2)/30 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000, and Section 201 of the Penal Code, before the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal.

Police said Ramisa’s headless body was recovered on the morning of 19 May from beneath a bed inside a flat in Pallabi, Mirpur, while her severed head was later found in a bathroom.

A murder case was subsequently filed with Pallabi Police Station.

At the outset of the investigation, Swapna Akter, wife of the prime accused Sohel Rana, was detained.

Sohel Rana was later arrested, after which he allegedly gave a confessional statement before the court admitting to the rape and murder of the child.

In his statement, Sohel Rana reportedly said that around 9:30am on 19 May, Ramisa entered his residence and was taken inside a room by his wife.

He further stated that he then took the child to the bathroom, where he committed the assault.

When the victim’s mother began knocking on the door, he allegedly slit the child’s throat.

He also stated that he dismembered the body using a sharp knife, moving it from the bathroom to the bedroom and concealing it under the bed.

He added that his wife was present in the room at the time of the incident and that he later escaped by cutting through a window grille.

He told the court there had been no prior enmity with the victim’s family.
