Police have arrested 32 activists of the banned Awami League and its associate organisations from different parts of the capital for allegedly attempting to hold an unauthorised “flash rally”, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
On Friday six individuals were detained from the flower market area in front of Agargaon Metro Rail Station under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Police said a group had gathered there to organise a sudden procession and tried to disperse when law enforcement arrived.
The arrestees were identified as Shyamal Chandra (27), Ayatul Haque (29), Siam (22), Mehedi Hasan Miad Khan (21), Tarek Rahman (22) and Selim Pradhan Shrabon (20).
In a separate operation after Jumma prayers, police detained 26 more individuals from Road No. 32 in Dhanmondi, following intelligence reports of preparations to bring out a procession.
Police said all the detainees are local political activists linked to the Awami League, adding that legal action is underway for allegedly organising an unauthorised gathering.
