Human chain demands embankment in Rampal

Locals formed a human chain demanding the immediate construction of a sustainable embankment to prevent river erosion and compensation for those affected by erosion along an area of about four kilometres from Romjaipur to Urabunia in Perikhali Union of Rampal Upazila, Bagerhat.

Residents of Romjaipur organised the human chain on the banks of the Ghosia Khali River in Romjaipur Purba Para on Sunday .More than 300 men and women affected by river erosion participated in the programme. During the human chain, participants held placards bearing various slogans, including “We want a sustainable embankment now,” “We are getting a ferry in exchange for our lives; we want a sustainable embankment,” and “Sell me, but give me an embankment.” Speakers at the human chain said people in Romjaipur and surrounding areas have been suffering severely from river erosion for a long time. Many houses, croplands, roads and other structures have already disappeared into the river.

As erosion has disrupted the communication system, education, healthcare and business activities are also being adversely affected, they said. Local residents complained that erosion has intensified due to strong river currents and waves generated by passing vessels.
