PM pledges action, not dreams

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman speaks at a 'Family Card' distribution programme on the field of Chandpur Government College in Chandpur on Saturday.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday (16 May) called on the people of Bangladesh to pledge their support for rebuilding the nation, emphasising that his government intends to turn plans into action to improve citizens’ lives.

Speaking at a rally following the inauguration of the
re-excavation of the historic Khorddo Khal canal in Shahrasti upazila, Chandpur, the prime minister said: “From today, let our only mission be nation-building and state reconstruction. Let this be our commitment.”

He stressed the importance of realistic and effective planning and urged citizens from all walks of life to work collectively to advance Bangladesh.

“Our goal is one and our purpose is one. We do not just want to dream; we want to implement plans that will benefit the country’s people, move the nation forward and change people’s fate,” he said.

Referring to the canal project, Bangladeshi Prime Minister noted that the initiative had been originally launched 48 years ago by his late father and former president Ziaur Rahman.

He highlighted the project’s importance for local agriculture, saying that farmers would benefit once the canal was fully re-excavated.

Quoting from the Holy Quran, he added: “Allah helps those who help themselves.”

The Prime Minister also underlined the power of collective effort, stating that Bangladesh could become a respected nation if all 20 crore citizens worked together.

“If 40 crore hands of 20 crore people work together, Insha’Allah, we will be able to build Bangladesh into a dignified state in the world,” he said.

He reaffirmed that the government would gradually implement election promises, stressing that the BNP strives to fulfil its commitments whenever in office. “The people of Bangladesh are the source of BNP’s strength.

As long as people stand beside us and support us, our work for the country will continue,” he said.

After travelling by road from Dhaka via Cumilla, the prime minister arrived at Waruk Bazar in Tamta South Union around 2:40 pm to formally inaugurate the Khorddo Khal re-excavation programme by unveiling a plaque, cutting soil with a spade, and planting a sapling.

Education Minister Anam Ehsanul Haque Milon, Disaster Management Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, and local leaders were present.

Thousands of supporters gathered along the canal to welcome the prime minister.

Later, he inaugurated the re-excavation of Bishwo Khal near Ghosher Hat in Shahmahmudpur Union of Chandpur Sadar upazila around 4:30 pm and planted another sapling.

The Bishwo Khal stretches from the Dakatiya River through Ghosher Hat up to the Matlab South boundary area.
