Police recover foreign currency worth Tk 2cr in Lalmonirhat
Lalmonirhat police recovered foreign currency worth around Tk 2 crore from an autorickshaw passenger during a raid at the Teesta Toll Plaza area under Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila on Thursday.
Police arrested the suspect, identified as Likhan Miah,( 23) during the raid.
According to police, a total of US$159,300 was recovered from his possession. The money had been concealed using a special method.
The seized currency included 1,581 notes of 100 US dollars and 24 notes of 50 US dollars.
Officer-in-Charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station Swapan Islam confirmed the seizure and said the foreign currency is currently in police custody.
He added that a comprehensive investigation has been launched to determine the source of the money and its intended destination.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Sadar Police Station led by Sub-Inspector Shahab Uddin set up a checkpoint in the area and stopped an autorickshaw for inspection.
During questioning, officers searched passenger Likhan Miah and recovered the foreign currency.
The arrested man is the son of Md Nurunnabi Sarkar of the Ghoshpara area under Kurigram Sadar Upazila.
Police said legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incident.
