BNP-backed panel sweeps SCBA election
The BNP-backed Blue Panel has secured a near-clean sweep in the Supreme Court Bar Association election for the 2026–27 term, winning 13 of the 14 posts, including president and secretary.
Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Panel, widely known as the Blue Panel, was elected president, while Mohammad Ali, also from the same panel, won the secretary post.
The Jamaat-backed Lawyers’ Unity Panel, known as the Green Panel, won one member post.
Justice Miftah Uddin Chowdhury, convener of the election sub-committee, announced the results around 2:00am on Friday.
A total of 4,048 votes were cast in the two-day election held on 13 and 14 May at the SCBA auditorium.
Voting began at 10:00am on both days and continued until 5:00pm, with a one-hour lunch break.
Lawyers backed by the Awami League, which faces a ban on its activities, did not participate in the election.
Apart from the president and secretary posts, Md Magfur Rahman Sheikh and Md Shahjahan were elected vice-presidents, while Md Ziaur Rahman won the treasurer post. All three were from the BNP-backed panel.
Maqsud Ullah and Mohammad Shamsul Islam Mukul, also from the Blue Panel, were elected assistant secretaries.
The six member posts won by the BNP-backed panel went to HM Sanjid Siddiqui, AKM Azad Hossain, Md Kabir Hossain, Md Tipu Sultan, Md Zia Uddin Mia and Wahid Afroz Chowdhury.
Md Azim Uddin Patwary from the Jamaat-backed Green Panel won the remaining member post.
