Farmers ready for Eid-ul-Azha: Work underway to fatten animals
Both the demand and production of sacrificial animals in Sylhet division have increased in view of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. As the date of Eid approaches, the work of fattening the sacrificial animals is going on in the farms of the division.
The farmers here are spending their time preparing the sacrificial animals and taking extra care of them. The busyness of the farmers is visible everywhere from villages to cities.
Farmers said that the cost of cow feed has increased. As a result, the price of animals has increased. In addition, they are worried about the loss due to the smuggling of cattle across the border.
The Livestock Department says that there is no shortage of sacrificial animals in Sylhet this time. Rather, there is a surplus of 13,690 animals.
According to relevant sources, this time the demand for sacrificial animals has increased by 697 compared to last year. Production has decreased by 22,651 compared to last year.
Before that, in the last 1 year (2025), the demand had decreased by 1,22,774. Production had decreased by 1,21,882 animals. In this regard, although the demand for 697 animals increased in one year, production decreased by another 22,651.
According to the information of the Sylhet Divisional Office of the Department of Livestock, this year the demand for sacrificial animals in Sylhet Division is 2,72,174. There are 2,85,864 ready. There will be a surplus of 13,690 to meet the demand.
Whereas last year (2025), the number of sacrificial animals in Sylhet Division for Eid-ul-Azha was 3,85,515. And the demand was 2,71,477. The surplus was 37,038 to meet the demand. As a result, the production of sacrificial animals in Sylhet has decreased by 22,651.
The previous year (2024), the number of sacrificial animals in Sylhet division for Eid-ul-Azha was 430,397. And the demand was 394,251. There was a surplus of 36,146 animals. Then, in a span of one year, the production of sacrificial animals in Sylhet had decreased by 121,882. And the demand decreased by 122,774.
According to the Livestock Department, Sylhet Divisional Office and farm sources, the demand for sacrificial animals in Sylhet division for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha is 272,174. Of these, 285,864 are locally prepared in Sylhet division. The remaining 13,690 animals can be exported to other districts of the country.
Like last year, it is possible to meet the demand with locally produced animals in the 4 districts of the division. In view of Eid, the work of fattening the sacrificial animals is going on in all the farms of Sylhet. Each farm has small, medium and large types of sacrificial animals.
Meanwhile, the Livestock Department has informed that farmers have been trained on fattening the cattle. In addition, awareness training has been given to farmers by holding yard meetings at the upazila level to prevent the use of steroids.
According to the Sylhet Divisional Livestock Office, this year, there are 1 lakh 19 thousand 25 bulls, 35 thousand 287 oxen, 28 thousand 790 cows, 6 thousand 366 buffaloes, 73 thousand 881 goats, 19 thousand 78 sheep and 3 thousand 437 other animals among the cattle eligible for sacrifice in Sylhet division.
