Light rain leaves parts of Dhaka waterlogged
Light rain caused temporary water logging in several parts of Dhaka on Monday, disrupting movement across the capital.
Though the morning began with patches of sunshine, dark clouds later gathered over the city before rain started around 1:45pm and lasted for nearly half an hour.
Pedestrians, hawkers, shopkeepers and office-goers rushed to take shelter under roadside stalls and buildings as the rain swept through the streets. Many were later seen wading through waterlogged roads.
Meteorologist Md Tariful Newaz Kabir said Dhaka recorded 23mm of rainfall before 3pm, while the highest rainfall during the period was recorded in Maijdee at 35mm.
He said scattered pre-monsoon thunder cell systems developed rapidly over the area, causing the sudden rainfall, and added that more rain is likely after May 14, although the intensity may decrease.
The rain led to temporary waterlogging in areas including Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-12.
Residents said even light rain causes flooding in the area every year, creating difficulties for commuters and schoolchildren despite repeated promises from city authorities.
Dhaka North City Corporation said its teams were working to clear drains and ensure quick drainage during the rainfall.
