SC upholds bail for Selina Ivy in 10 cases
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday upheld the High Court’s bail order for former Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in 10 cases, clearing the way for her release.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury dismissed separate appeals filed by the state challenging the High Court’s bail orders.
Following the apex court’s decision, there is no legal obstruction to her release, confirmed her lawyer Motahar Hossain Saju.
Earlier, the High Court had granted bail to Ivy in several cases in phases, including five cases on February 26 this year and two more murder cases later linked to the July uprising.
The state had repeatedly moved the Appellate Division seeking stays on the High Court’s bail orders, some of which were temporarily halted by the chamber judge before being referred to the full bench.
The cases against Ivy include four murder charges related to killings during the July uprising and another case involving allegations of assault and obstruction of government duties.
She was first shown arrested in multiple cases on November 9 last year after being detained from her residence in Narayanganj. Later, she was implicated in additional cases in March and April this year.
With Sunday’s ruling, the legal process regarding her bail has effectively concluded at the appellate stage.
