Nilphamari to get 1,000-bed BD-China funded hospital

A 1,000-bed Bangladesh-China Friendship General Hospital is set to be built in Nilphamari, marking a major expansion of healthcare facilities in northern Bangladesh.

The project, estimated at Tk 2,292 crore, formally moved forward on Saturday (May 9, 2026) following a preliminary site survey conducted by a high-level Chinese delegation.

Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Health Fatema Tuz Zohra said that a modern 10-storey hospital building will be constructed under the project.

It will also include dormitories and residential facilities for doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff, along with a director’s bungalow and supporting infrastructure.
Of the 1,000 beds, 500 will be allocated for general patients, while the remaining 500 will be dedicated to specialized services.
She added that the hospital will provide advanced treatment in specialized departments such as nephrology, cardiology, oncology, and neurology. The facility will also include a modern emergency department, ICU, CCU, and HDU services, along with an advanced diagnostic center and fully equipped operation theatres.
A six-member technical team led by Dong Li visited the Darowani Textile area to inspect the 25-acre proposed project site and conducted initial technical assessments as part of the planning phase. The hospital is being implemented under the Directorate General of Health Services, with the Chinese government providing around Tk 2,219 crore as a grant.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Nayiruzzaman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Saidul Islam, and Civil Surgeon Dr. Abdur Razzaq were also present during the visit.
Officials said that once completed, the hospital is expected to significantly improve healthcare services in northern Bangladesh and reduce the need for patients to travel to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
