Deal with US could be revised Minister

Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir has said provisions of the trade agreement signed with the United States can be revised if any clause is later found to be contrary to Bangladesh’s national interests.

Speaking to reporters on Friday after visiting the district council natural park project in the Baish Tila area of Sylhet, he said agreements between countries cannot be altered arbitrarily like private agreements between individuals.

Replying to a question on inflation, the minister said the recent rise in fuel oil prices would cause only a “one-time impact” and would not lead to persistent or runaway inflation.

e also noted that inefficiencies in port management are pushing up transportation costs and said a Danish expert has been appointed to help improve port operations.

The minister further said the government plans to transfer loss-making state-owned factories to private investors in a bid to generate employment and boost revenue collection.

On the proposed natural park in Sylhet, he said the district council owns 43 acres of land in the area and is working to develop it into a tourist destination.

“There will be cable cars, rope bridges and various other facilities in the park, offering attractions for both children and adults,” he said.

He added that a master plan for the project has already been prepared and that the government will provide funding for its implementation.
