Senior officials to travel economy on foreign trips

The government has directed all additional secretaries and officials of equivalent rank in both government and state-run institutions to travel in economy class during official foreign visits, replacing earlier provisions that allowed higher travel classes.

The instruction is part of austerity measures aimed at reducing public expenditure and ensuring more prudent use of state funds.

According to a notice issued by the Finance Division, the decision was taken following a directive from the Prime Minister’s Office dated 29 April 2026.

Previously, senior officials of additional secretary rank and above were permitted to travel in business, executive or club class for official foreign trips.

The new directive will remain in force until further notice.
