8 hurt as bus overturns in Cumilla

At least eight passengers were injured when a Dhaka-bound bus fell into a roadside ditch and overturned in Chandina upazila of Cumilla on Friday morning.

Police, quoting locals, said the “Evergreen” bus was carrying 25 passengers and had left Cox’s Bazar for Dhaka.

The accident occurred around 7:00am in the Kurerpar area of Kerankhal union on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway when the bus reportedly suffered a brake failure. The driver then lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the highway and overturn in a roadside ditch.

Locals rushed to the scene and rescued the injured passengers before taking them to Chandina Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Mashrafi, the bus supervisor, said one of the vehicle’s tyres had deflated in Satkania, Chattogram, and was replaced before the bus resumed its journey.

“The accident occurred near Kurerpar after the brakes suddenly failed. There were 25 passengers on the bus,” he said.

Md Ashraf Uddin, sub-inspector of the Eliotganj Highway Police outpost, said none of the injured passengers sustained serious injuries. They left the hospital after receiving primary treatment.

With the assistance of Chandina Fire Service personnel, the bus was salvaged from the ditch around 12:30pm.
