DSCC aims to address mosquito crisis

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam urged all government offices, residential quarters, educational institutions and others stakeholders to ensure maximum professionalism in mosquito control operations.

He announced the decision at a views-exchange meeting held at the Nagar Bhaban in the capital on Monday that the first Saturday of each month would be observed as ‘Cleaning Day’ in all areas under the corporation to combat dengue and other Aedes mosquito-borne diseases and maintain a cleaner urban environment.

The first formal observance of the campaign will take place on May 9 across the DSCC jurisdiction.
The DSCC Administrator said maintaining insecticide quality, applying proper spraying methods, strengthening monitoring and providing adequate training to field-level workers are urgent to address the issue.

According to decisions taken at the meeting, all government offices, residential quarters, educational institutions including schools, colleges and madrasas, as well as areas under RAJUK and REHAB, in addition to privately owned establishments within DSCC limits, will carry out cleanliness drives and remove potential mosquito breeding spots through their own initiatives.

Abdus Salam said public awareness and regular cleanliness remained the most effective means to prevent dengue and chikungunya.

He said if both public and private institutions, along with city residents, kept their surroundings clean, mosquito-borne diseases could be brought under control, adding that no negligence in DSCC’s mosquito control activities would be tolerated.

The DSCC administrator also called upon media organisations to air public awareness messages on dengue and chikungunya prevention alongside commercial broadcasts in the greater public interest.
Representatives from the Directorate General of Health Services, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Dhaka Medical College, Border Guard Bangladesh, Islamic Foundation, Bangladesh Railway, the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, and Jagannath University, among others, attended the meeting.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Zahurul Islam and other senior officials were also present.
