Port city flooded again after short spell of rain
One and a half hours of rain in the port city caused waterlogging again in the Pravartak More, Katalganj, Panchlaish, Rahmatganj, and Sirajuddaula Road areas. The rain started in the city with gusty winds on Sunday (May 03). Before the rain ended, waterlogging occurred again in the part of the city from Pravartak More to Badna Shah Mazar.
There was waterlogging in the Pravartak More, Panchlaish residential area, and some parts of Katalganj for three consecutive days last Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. On the instructions of the Prime Minister, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam came to Chattogram on Wednesday to assess and address the issue and faced criticism for making various statements. State Minister and City Mayor Shahadat Hossain also said that the embankments of the city’s Hijra Canal and Jamalkhan Canal would be removed within five days after visiting the area. Three days later, most of the previously affected areas were again flooded.
Local residents and officials say that not all the embankments of these canals have been removed. Water accumulated in the area from the vicinity of Badna Shah’s shrine to the Pravartak intersection.
However, the water receded from the ‘Rupali Guitar’ square at the Pravartak intersection before evening, but water still remained in front of Badna Shah’s shrine. There are several private diagnostic centers and clinics on the road, which is also one of the main routes leading to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Pranab Kumar Sharma, Deputy Chief Sanitation Officer of the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), said, “Not all the embankments have been removed yet. There are many residential areas around Mimi Supermarket, from where all the water flows this way. We will have to give it some time. However, there was no water in the areas of Tin Pole, GEC intersection, and WASA intersection.”
