Law and Order: Top terrorists under intelligence surveillance
Law enfsorcement agencies in Dhaka have stepped up monitoring and coordination efforts amid concerns over crime following the release of several individuals on bail.
Speaking at a press conference at the RAB Media Centre on Saturday, MZM Intekhab Chowdhury said that individuals previously identified as top criminals and now out on bail have been placed under intelligence surveillance.
He noted that the list of such individuals is being continuously updated.
He added that a “shadow investigation” is underway into the murder of Titon, described by authorities as a known criminal figure.
Following the killing in Newmarket, multiple Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) teams have been deployed to identify those responsible.
“Operations are ongoing based on CCTV footage and intelligence information,” he said, adding that efforts are focused on establishing both the motive and those involved.
Separately, Md. Sarwar, Acting Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said the force is regularly revising its list of criminal suspects as part of broader crime prevention efforts.
Speaking after inaugurating a new police camp in Karwan Bazar, he remarked that while there are currently no individuals formally classified as “top terrorists”, associates of previously identified figures are believed to be involved in ongoing criminal activities.
He further alleged that attempts are being made to destabilise the situation by using the names of former criminal figures.
“The list is being updated regularly, and action will be taken proactively,” he said.
Authorities stated that RAB, police and intelligence agencies are working in coordination, particularly in the Karwan Bazar area, to curb extortion and related offences.
The newly established police camp will operate round the clock, with additional personnel to be deployed if required. Immediate action will be taken on receiving information, officials said.
Addressing public concerns about access to justice, the Acting DMP Commissioner added that if any police station refuses to register a case, victims may approach senior officers, including zonal Assistant Commissioners or Deputy Commissioners.
Complaints against police conduct, he said, would be investigated seriously.
The renewed measures come amid heightened public concern over law and order in the capital following recent high-profile incidents.
